BEIRUT: An explosion just outside the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Tuesday killed a local Palestinian security official amid tensions between the main Palestinian faction and extremist groups.
The blast instantly killed the official, a member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group. Lebanese officials identified the man as Fathi Zeidan, Fatah’s security chief in the refugee camp of Mieh Mieh, which is located near Sidon.
The explosion occurred after a security meeting in Mieh Mieh that was attended by Zeidan, during which the bomb was believed to have been placed inside his car. The bomb weighed nearly 1 kg and the force of the blast destroyed Zeidan’s car and scattered his remains.
The Lebanese Armed Forces issued a statement, saying the bomb was placed inside the BMW and adding that an investigation was underway.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.
The camp of Mieh Mieh is also located near another Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon — Ein El-Hilweh. Tiny Lebanon is home to some 400,000 Palestinian refugees.
